RISE to Host Critical Conversation Panel Discussion at Baltimore's St. Frances Academy
Panelists Include St. Frances Alum Angel McCoughtry and Angel Reese
July 19, 2023
NEW YORK - RISE, the national nonprofit coalition of major U.S. sports leagues and media networks that uses sports to eliminate racism and champion social justice, is proud to announce it is hosting a Critical Conversation panel discussion at St. Frances Academy in Baltimore, MD on Wednesday, July 19th.
The Critical Conversation panel, which features WNBA Great and two-time Olympic Gold medalist, Angel McCoughtry, LSU Women's Basketball 2023 National Champion Forward Angel Reese, 29x Paralympic Medalist Swimmer and Women's Sports Foundation Athlete Captain Jessica Long and St. Frances Academy Assistant Girls Varsity Basketball Coach Nytearia Burrell, will discuss empowering female student athletes to take control of their narratives and disrupt public perception of women of color in sports. The panel will be moderated by RISE Chief Executive Officer Diahann Billings-Burford.
McCoughtry and Reese, who both played and graduated from St. Frances, will also take part in a skills basketball camp with the St. Frances girls basketball team prior to the panel discussion.
“We are incredibly honored to be a part of this panel and basketball clinic with St. Frances Academy and two of their most notable alumni,” said RISE CEO Diahann Billings-Burford. “We look forward to continuing to discuss ways we can move the needle in supporting women in sports.”
“The journey starts from your upbringing. It's the love, culture and neighborhood that impacts your character. When I look back on my career, the story can't be told without mentioning the heart and soul that Baltimore and St. Frances installed in me,” said McCoughtry. “Kids are the future and who we aim to inspire daily by teaching them the importance of forward thinking. Reese and myself are examples of what hard work looks like and that anything is possible no matter what your surroundings are. I'm thankful and excited to create memories that will last forever at this event. Keep Dreaming!”
“I wanted to come back to my hometown and show girls in Baltimore city that they matter and can achieve anything. It's important for athletes to use their platform to partner with schools like St. Frances Academy and non-profit organizations like RISE to help empower girls and women in sports,” said Reese. “So this is for the girls that look like me. For those that want to speak up for what they believe in."
The panel discussion will take place at 10:15 a.m. on Wednesday, July 19.
