With the 55th anniversary of the Voting Rights Act serving as the backdrop, on Aug. 6 the reigning Super Bowl champion Kansas City Chiefs took a break from their goal of a repeat to inspire a change outside of their locker room.
RISE and its nonpartisan voter education and registration initiative RISE to Vote partnered with the Chiefs that day for a virtual session. RISE led the session, equipping the Chiefs players, coaches and staff with the tools and knowledge to get involved, make a difference and inspire their fans to be civically active. RISE to Vote, which launched three years ago and has worked with more than 60 teams, engages athletes, coaches and staff at all levels, educating them on how to vote and why it matters.
Former NFL MVP Patrick Mahomes II and star player Tyrann Mathieu spoke to their teammates about the importance of voting and their own struggles, whether with getting registered or with feelings on how much their vote matters as a Black person in America.

All-Pro Tyrann Mathieu tells the Chiefs everyone has a role to play in our democracy during a RISE to Vote session.
"If we weren't having this meeting, I wouldn't even know that I wasn't registered," said Mahomes, who thought he was registered but learned his registration was denied hours before the session. "That's why we partnered with RISE. They have the tools to make sure that we as leaders in the community can get registered."
